Arrhythmia after cardiac surgery
Park Sang-Weon

Abstract
Postoperative arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter, are one of the most frequent complications of cardiac surgery. Eventhough the nature of these complications is transient, their development is associated with an increased morbidity, prolonged hospitalization and mortality. Given the importance of AF for patient outcome, a wide variety of prophylactic pharmacologic strategies have been evaluated. The risk of postoperative AF should be reduced by the administration of amiodarone, a beta-blocker, sotalol or rate-limiting calcium antagonists. More recently, some data regarding magnesium, statins and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in reducing post-op AF are available. With regards to the ability to predict morbidity and mortality associated with postoperative arrhythmia, more data about prophylactic therapy is needed.
